    The KE-USB108 Switch Inputs

The KE-USB108 features 108 individual inputs. These inputs are activated by connecting the input (such as through a switch) to the common ground on the KE-USB108 I/O header. Each input may be programmed to output a single keystroke, or a sequence (macro) of keystrokes. For macros, each input may generate up to 64 keystrokes when activated, and up to 64 keystrokes when the input is released. In addition to keystrokes, inputs may be programmed to respond as joystick buttons (up to 64), or mouse buttons.

Since all 108 inputs are individual, there is no chance of "phantom" keys that are inherent in scanning a matrix. With the individual input configuration, any combination of inputs may be activated simultaneously during operation. All the inputs share the same common ground.

The configuration for the input responses is stored on board the KE-USB108 in non-volatile memory. This memory is maintained until the configuration is changed again by the user.

What types of switches can I use?

Use any type of switch that produces a contact closure. The KE-USB108 can accept inputs from pushbutton switches or toggle switches. The inputs may be programmed to send a response when the input is activated, when it is de-activated, or both, making the unit ideal for handling toggle switch actions!

In addition to "dry" contact closures, connection to 5V CMOS or TTL circuits is also possible. The KE-USB108 considers a logic low level as an active input.

    Accessories needed for Operation

When ordering the KE-USB108, you may need additional accessories to connect the unit for your application. For connection of the KE-USB108 to your USB port on the PC, a Type A/B USB cable is required (our part # KE-USBMM6, $5.95). We also offer a Trackball Interface cable (our KE-TBH3, $9.95), for connection of the KE-USB108 to a Happ Controls Trackball. For Spinner connections, use our KE-SP3 cable ($5.95). We offer our MTA100-3-12 pigtail ($1.90) for connecting to the KE-USB108 Joystick potentiometer inputs. Our MTA100-4-12 ($1.95) is used for attaching to the rotary encoder switch inputs. See below for input wiring accessories.

Attaching wires to the KE-USB108 input headers

The KE-USB108 features three 2x20 headers with 36 inputs on each. The headers also include 4 ground connections which are used as the common to activate all inputs. These 2x20 headers will accept a standard IDE cable plug. You may also want to use our IOX36 breakout board. The IOX36 connects to the KE-USB108 input header through an included IDE cable, and brings each pin out to a screw terminal for easy access. Up to three IOX36 boards may be used with a KE-USB108. See our Accessories page for the IOX36.

    Rotary Encoder Inputs

The KE-USB108 provides two ports for connection of rotary encoder switches. Either mechanical or optical rotary encoders may be used. An array of programmable options are available for the rotary encoder inputs which allow them to be tailored to the particular rotary encoder switch connected to the input. The response to each direction of rotary switch rotation can be set to send a keystroke or keystrokes.

    The KE-USB108 Trackball Interface

The KE-USB108 features an interface for converting Trackball signals into USB mouse signals. This feature means the user may take the raw data from a Trackball directly into the KE-USB108 Trackball Interface port. No other electronics, or power for the Trackball is needed since the KE-USB108 supplies the power to the Trackball itself (Except for a backlight, if the Trackball has one). The Trackball input is compatible with both active high and active low Trackball signals.

We offer an interface cable, our KE-TBH3, which connects directly to the popular Happ Controls Trackball. This 3 foot long cable provides an easy connection to the Happ Trackball, and other compatible units.

    The KE-USB108 Spinner Interface

The KE-USB108 supplies an input for converting Spinner signals into USB mouse signals. Raw signals from the spinner may be used as mouse wheel movement or directed to the X or Y mouse movement. The KE-USB108 provides power to the Spinner optics. The Spinner port accepts inputs from either active low or active high spinners.

We offer an interface cable, our 3 foot long KE-SP3, which connects directly to many popular Spinners.

    Joystick Analog Inputs

Three analog inputs are provided on the KE-USB108 to allow for potentiometer usage for joystick X, Y, and Z axis controls. Connect any potentiometer from 10K to 1M resistance values to the KE-USB108 to produce action on the desired joystick axis. The individual axes may be enabled or disabled allowing for the use of any or all of the joystick axis inputs.

    The KE-USB108 Status LED Header

The KE-USB108 provides a header which can drive keyboard status LEDs. There are signals provided for driving the Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, and Num Lock LEDs.

How the KE-USB108 connects to your PC

The KE-USB108 simulates a keyboard, mouse, and joystick on your PC. The unit plugs into a single USB port on the PC or USB Hub.

    Programming the KE-USB108 Input Responses

Each of the KE-USB108 inputs may be programmed to output a standard keystroke, joystick button, or mouse button when activated and/or released. In the case of keystrokes, each input may also be programmed to generate a macro, or sequence of keystrokes, when activated and/or released.

Programming of the inputs is accomplished through the use of our included software. This sofware allows the user to program input repsonses and also enable other features for the input ports. The KE-USB108 maintains the configuration last loaded until you change it again, as it is held in non-volatile memory on the board.

    KE-USB108 Warranty

The KE-USB108, like all of our Keyboard Encoder Modules, is backed by our ONE YEAR limited warranty. In addition, we offer toll-free technical support during our normal business hours.
